Johnson County, Texas’ county seat is the City of Cleburne, known as Camp Henderson. It was a Civil War camp where Johnson County troops would depart for battle, and the majority served under General Cleburne. The city’s incorporation date was recorded in 1871.

The area was near the earliest road in the county, which ran from Cleburne to Alabaster. The site was a stopping point for cattlemen on the Chisholm Trail because it had water from West Buffalo Creek.

The city was sued in the U.S. Supreme Court over a special-use permit in 1985, after which it became the petitioner in City of Cleburne v. Cleburne Living Center, Inc. Shortly afterward, the city filed an appeal and asked for a stay to allow plaintiffs’ counsel to respond to our motion before hearing an argument on behalf of the state and federal government’s claims against it.

Cleburne is situated in north Texas’ outskirts. As a result, the area’s growth may be attributed mainly to suburbanization. However, it is Johnson County’s second-largest city.
