Harmony Bends Championship Disc Golf Course at Strawn Park
Strawn Park is a public park near Columbia MO. The park is on the south side of town, just off Route B. It features a playground, picnic tables, and a walking trail. A small pond in the park is also popular with children in summer.
The park was named after former Columbia mayor James Strawn, who served from 1892 to 1896. He was instrumental in developing the city’s parks system and helped to establish several of the city’s first parks, including Strawn Park.
National Park Services acquired the land on which Strawn Park is located to serve as a trailhead for the planned Perche Creek Trail. In addition, the number one ranked public disc golf course, Harmony Bends Championship Disc Golf Course, attracts visitors from around the country. A non-reservable shelter and lovely woodlands and streams are additional features of this community park.
Today, the park is a popular spot for families and dog-walkers alike. It is well-maintained by the city and provides a beautiful respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. So if you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors, Strawn Park is the perfect spot. The park is accessible from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm and has a massive land area of 52 hectares.
The Strawn Park consists of natural amenities as well. The Harmony and Perche Creek runs through the park and features bridges that offer scenic views of the river. The Strawn Park is also rich in Riparian Zones – areas of land adjacent to water bodies that support a diverse range of plant and animal life. The park is home to woodlands and various trees, including maples, oaks, elms, hickories, and sycamores. The trees in the park provide a habitat for various birds, squirrels, and other animals.
Strawn Park also offers a shelter that visitors can use for picnics, parties, or other events. Unfortunately, visitors cannot reserve the shelter in advance. It also has restrooms available, but they close in during the freezing or winter season.
One of the major attractions in Strawn Park is the Harmony Bends Championship Disc Golf Course. This course offers 18 holes of Championship level disc golf and is one of the Midwest’s most challenging and scenic courses. The course has been designed to test the skills of even the most experienced players while providing a fun and enjoyable experience.
The Harmony Bends course features beautiful views of downtown Columbia and the University of Missouri campus, as well as a variety of challenging hole layouts that will keep you coming back for more. With its convenient location and amenities, the Harmony Bends Course is the perfect place for your next round of disc golf.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DISC GOLF
Frisbee Golf is also known as Disc Golf. It is an airborne disc game in which the players aim a disc at a target. The rules are similar to those of golf. Most disc-golf discs are made from polypropylene plastic. It is also known as Polypropylene. It’s a thermoplastic polymer resin that can be used for various purposes. Other plastics can also be used to make discs. These are heated and then molded individually. The course usually has 9 or 18 holes. A hole is completed by a player throwing a disc off a tee pad or other area towards a target (known as a basket) and throwing another throw from where it landed until they reach the basket. Baskets are made of wire and hanging chains that hang above the basket. These baskets catch the inbound discs, which fall into the basket to score points. The number of attempts a player makes to get to each basket, often concerning the par score, is usually tallied. Players aim to finish each hole with the fewest number of throws. The number of strokes an expert player must make to reach a hole (or group of holes) is called par. Click through the next article
It is currently played in around 40 countries. As of March 31, 2022, there were 90,916 members active in the PDGA globally.
In the early 1900s, disc golf was first invented in Bladworth (Saskatchewan), Canada, in 1927, where they played the first disc golf game. Ronald Franklin Gibson and his Bladworth Elementary School friends played a game where they threw tin lids in 4-foot-wide circles drawn onto sandy areas on the grounds. The game was called Tin Lid Golf, and they played it quite often. However, the game ended as they became older and separated. Another game, Modern Disc Golf, was introduced in Canada at the Canadian Open Frisbee Championships, Vancouver and Toronto (British Columbia) in the 1970s.
Although disc golf was invented in the 1960s, there are still questions about who was the original inventor of the concept. Several groups played disc golf independently in the 1960s, according to consensus. For example, Rice University, Houston, Texas, hosted tournaments that used trees as targets in 1964. In the 1960s, at Pendleton King Park, Augusta, Georgia, players would throw Frisbees in 50-gallon trash cans as targets. Frisbee Golf, played in Alameda Park, Santa Barbara, California, in 1968, was also enjoyed by teens from the Anacapa or Sola streets. The course featured gazebos, water fountains, lamp posts, and trees. The course was held for many years. An Alameda Park collectors disc is still available, although it’s rare as very few copies have been made since then. Clifford Towne, a member of this group, became a National Time Aloft Record holder.
Ed Headrick (1926 – 2002) was an American inventor of toys. Most well-known for his contributions to the invention of modern Frisbee and disc golf, he is also known as “Steady” Ed Headrick.
Headrick left Wham-O in 1975 after helping to redesign the flying disc known as the Frisbee. However, a new passion eventually severed the ties between Headrick & Wham-O. As a result, Headrick quit Wham-O to pursue “Disc Golf,” which he invented and registered.
