The government transformed the lower part of Jefferson Street into a bustling commercial and transport hub along the Missouri River after they moved to Jefferson, Missouri, in 1826. James A. Crump, now the Lohman Building, was built in 1839. This sturdy stone structure would be used as a warehouse, grocery store, tavern, telegraph office, and hotel. First, he opened a store for groceries in the west basement. Then he sold the eastern section to John Yount and the middle section to E. B. Cordell. The three owners of the lower floors he leased to him, and he opened the Missouri House Hotel. The area was dubbed “the landing,” and Crump’s hotel became a popular meeting spot for legislators and rivermen.
The 1850s saw a boom in business thanks to the Pacific Railroad. The capital city was the point of entry for goods arriving from the east via rail or steamboat. The landing was the hub of much of this activity. Charles Maus, and his brother-in-law, Charles Lohman, bought Crump’s east portion and opened a general shop. In response to growing hotel demand, Maus built an 1855 hotel right across from Crump’s building. A few yards from the hotel, Christopher Maus was Maus’ brother. Charles Maus was the first to name his hotel Missouri Hotel, and later Veranda Hotel. After Maus’ return from Civil War service, They changed the name again. Finally, as a sign of wartime sentiments, he renamed the Union Hotel.
In 1859, Lohman ended his partnership with Maus and purchased the remaining parts of the Lohman Building. The site was home to one of the largest warehouses in the country and several mercantile shops.
River traffic declined after the war as railroads were cheaper and more efficient. As a result, Lohman and Maus moved their business away from the landing in the 1870s. The Union Hotel, the Lohman Building, and other storage spaces were converted into tenements and offices by the Tweedie Shoe Co.
In 1960, the state purchased the land with an initial intention to build a parking lot. However, concerned citizens led Elizabeth Rozier to initiate a campaign to preserve the buildings. In 1969, they added Lohman Building to the National Register of Historic Places. The state’s bicentennial committee adopted the Jefferson Landing plan as its official bicentennial project in 1974. Union Hotel and the Lohman Building were both restored. The Jefferson Landing State Historic Site was officially opened on July 4, 1976, by the Lohman Building.
Jefferson Landing State Historic Site is a unique Missouri River landing. Lohman Building is a warehouse and general store from the 1850s.
