White Castle

The fast-food chain White Castle, which has 377 locations in 13 states, also branched out near Columbia Missouri. However, its prominent presence is in Midwest and New York Metropolitan. White Castle is a fast-food hamburger chain based in Kansas in the City of Wichita and has been widely considered the world’s first such business. It is famous for its tiny, square burgers called “sliders.” Their burgers sold at five cents in 1929 and stayed at ten cents in 1949. In the 1940s, White Castle ran promotional advertisements in newspapers offering consumers to pay ten cents in exchange for five burgers with coupons that called for takeout only. White Castle’s “Slider” was coined ‘The Most Influential Burger of All Time’ by Time Magazine in 2014.

After World War I, a cook named Walter A. Anderson, who had been running food stalls in Wichita on 1916, opened his first dining in a decommissioned trolley. After opening two more restaurants, he was preparing to start another when he met Edgar Waldo A. Ingram, who was working in the real estate and insurance business. They launched the White Castle Restaurant Chain after meeting each other.

In 1921, White Castle was formed in Wichita, Kansas. Ingram teamed up with Anderson to grow White Castle into a restaurant chain and promote the brand and its unique product. In 1924, they incorporated the company and named White Castle System of Eating Houses Corporation; the corporation still exists today. The pair of entrepreneurs that launched White Castle in Wichita, Kansas, in 1921 had a total investment of $700. The original site was the northwest corner of First and Main; the building has since been demolished.

Prospects were hesitant to eat beef patties because Upton Sinclair’s novel titled The Jungle, published in 1906, exposed the unsanitary meat-packing industry. As a result, the founders decided to alter public opinion about the sanitary of their business. They constructed restaurants with tiny buildings and stainless steel designs that invoked a sense of cleanliness in public. In 1922, after witnessing the success of their first Wichita restaurants, the business expanded into Midwestern cities, including Kansas in the city of El Dorado.

On January 27, 2015, the first White Castle in Nevada opened at the Casino Royale Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. It was 56 years since White Castle expanded into a new area outside the Midwest and Northeast. White Castle’s first day featured an overwhelming demand for food that required the eatery to close for two hours to replenish. During the launch of White Castle, Vice President Jamie Richardson stated that the restaurant sold 4,000 sliders per hour in its first 12 hours. He was unaware of any prior closures owing to unusual demand at White Castle, which has been in operation for 94 years. On September 22, 2017, a second Whitecastle opened on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, and a third opened shortly after in Jean.

White Castle began selling vegetarian buns without dairy in September 2015.

White Castle began selling meat-free Impossible Burgers in 2018 that mimic the flavor and texture of beef burgers.
