MCKAY PARK

McKay Park is located in the heart of Jefferson City, Missouri. It’s a tranquil oasis. You can enjoy a wide range of activities and amenities here, which makes it a great place to spend the day with family and friends.

The Department of Public Works and the Department of Parks and Recreation collaborated on the development of McKay Park from 1988-1989. The project created parkland while also addressing stormwater management issues. Neil McKay, who gave $80,000 to the project, was honored with the name “McKay Park.”

Sunset Lake, as previously known, was the location of a resort built in the 1920s. The retreat was secluded and had swimming pools. Unfortunately, the dam proved faulty, and the lake had to be drained for many years; it was an eyesore until the City eventually restored it.

McKay Park is an excellent place for a family day trip. McKay Park has something for everyone, with a playground, pavilions, walking trails, and even an outdoor fishing lake.

Picnicking is possible in the park’s numerous pavilions and playgrounds. You can also find horseshoe pits or basketball courts. The park is accessed via a 2.5-mile trail that runs through woods and meadows. The Missouri River is visible from this trail.

The playground equipment at McKay Park is fantastic, and the pavilions are great for groups. The pathways provide stunning views of the rural area. The pond is also available to visitors who wish to fish. All year, McKay Lake may be fished by hobbyists. Bank fishing is, however, prohibited. The most frequent species are bluegills and channel catfish. The Jefferson City, Winter Trout Program, stocks McKay Lake with over 2,400 trout in November to prepare for the following season. During the winter, McKay Park’s rear dam is an excellent location for sledding.

McKay Park covers 20.4 acres and features a 1km (0.6 mi) fitness path that circles the lake, a playground, and an asphalt basketball court. In addition, there are ten picnic spots.

McKay Park has many recreational activities. Interactive exhibits about the Lewis & Clark expedition are also available at the Lewis & Clark Discovery Center. This center also offers a great place to learn about Jefferson City’s past and the United States.
