The Shelter Insurance Gardens, located on the corporate headquarters’ grounds, are arguably the corporation’s most prominent feature. More than 15,000 annual and perennial plants grow in the park’s five acres, which include more than 300 distinct species of trees and shrubs.

The gardens are open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 am until dark and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am until 5 pm (except Christmas Day, when they are closed).

Everyone is welcome to attend, including schoolchildren, scientists, and field trips. Visitors enjoy the gardens as a picnic spot, a place to unwind, and a fantastic location for a stroll.

Students from schools and institutions in Columbia stop by the Shelter Gardens to learn about horticulture and forestry. First, elementary pupils go on field trips to collect leaves for study. Then, they go on class trips to the gardens to collect leaves for their specimens. Each garden species has a botanical record with scientific and popular names for the plant’s genus.
